KULGAM, JUNE 05: The World Environment Day-2024 was on Wednesday celebrated by the Department of Environmental Science, Govt. Degree College (GDC) Kulgam in collaboration with NCC/NSS units of the college on the theme ‘Land restoration, desertification and drought resilience’.
The principal of the college, Prof. Syed Eazaz Hussain Rizvi in his address emphasized the importance of land restoration and drought impacts on humans.
The invited speaker on the occasion, Dr. Khalid Muzamil Gani, Assistant Professor (Environmental Engineering) Department of Civil Engineering, National Institute of Technology Srinagar in his talk laid emphasis on the technological options for the revival of water cycle and sources.
He detailed the various technological options available for the restoration of water bodies and pollution control with special emphasis on wastewater recycling.
The organizing secretary of the program, Dr. Gowhar Hamid Dar highlighted the historical importance of the day and deliberated upon the significance of land restoration. He also spoke about the negative impacts of desertification and droughts.
During the programme, the students also made presentations on the topic and expressed their views on the theme.
The student presentations were judged by Prof. Mohd Altaf Sofi and Dr. Bilal Ahmad Shah. The first position was bagged by Zainab Naushad, Second by Muskana Abass and third position by Shabeena Shahi.
