Libraries must evolve into vibrant spaces fostering creativity, reading culture among students: Prof Sindhu

SCERT’s 3 day orientation programme concludes

JAMMU, JANUARY 17: The Library and Documentation Wing of State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Jammu, successfully concluded a highly engaging three day orientation programme, aimed at launching innovative activities to promote joyful reading among the children.

The programme brought together 50 librarians from ten districts of Jammu division, equipping them with strategies to make reading an engaging and transformative experience.

The inaugural ceremony was led by Joint Director, SCERT, Divisional Office Jammu, Professor Sindhu Kapoor and joined by all academic unit heads, coordinator and other faculty members.

Resource Person, Ruchi Mohan, started the day’s proceedings while Dr. Bhuvi, the programme coordinator presented an encompassing overview emphasising the importance of fostering a culture of reading through creative initiatives such as reading campaigns, competitions, spell-bees, which are specifically tailored for primary and elementary students. She underscored the role of librarians as catalysts in nurturing a love for reading among the children.

Following the overview, Sultana Koser, Associate Professor Head AU-I, shared valuable insights on leveraging library resources effectively to create a joyful learning environment.

In her insightful address, Joint Director, SCERT, highlighted the pivotal role of libraries as the intellectual heart of educational institutions. She emphasised that libraries must evolve into vibrant and dynamic spaces that inspire curiosity, foster creativity and stimulate critical thinking among the students. She promulgated, the preservation of newspapers, periodicals and archival materials must be prioritised as these resources provide an invaluable lens into societal evolution.

The program featured multiple sessions covering diverse themes like Practical demonstrations on designing and conducting engaging reading abilities in English, Hindi, and Urdu, role of librarians in promoting joyful learning, Constitution of India, gender sensitisation in school libraries and interactive quiz activities.

All the sessions were conducted by versatile resource persons namely Dr. Sandeep Singh, Dr. Meenakshi Chandan, Shamim Nazki, Manu Vasudev, Neeraj Jamwal, Irfan Qureshi, Paawan Vivek, Vivek Jandiyal, Manisha Chun and Ruchi Mohan.

Parveen Akhter, Wing head, expertly supervised the whole programme and ensured smooth conduct of all activities with efficiency and poise.

The programme concluded in a formal valedictory ceremony, where the participants shared their reflections and outlined plans to implement the learnings in their respective schools.

The programme was punctiliously coordinated by Dr. Bhuvi and Ruchi Mohan who acted as associate coordinators and was effectively managed by a diligent team including Bikram Singh, Shamim Nazki, Rukhsana Gulbadan, Rakesh Chobber and Lakshmi Puri.
Later, vote of thanks was presented by Bikram Singh.
