Cordon of Stray Dogs — Human Lives Matter

The presence of stray dogs in every nook and corner of the Valley is proving detrimental to the society as besides injuring the people, these dogs are mauling the humans to death.
In one such instance, a minor boy was killed by a pack of dogs in Pattan area of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district on February 06, 2022, putting a question mark over the government’s lackadaisical attitude towards the grave issue. It is not the first death by stray dogs, but earlier in the year 2020, a noted lawyer of Dewanbagh Baramulla too was mauled to death.
Besides claiming the human lives, the stray dogs are also involved in killing the cattle as in the recent two dozen sheep were killed in central Kashmir’s Ganderbal district. Moreover, a huge chunk of the population, especially the minors, have also become the victim of stray dogs, who have sustained injuries after they were attacked by the pack of dogs in their respective localities.
Nonetheless, the question remains that what measures are being taken to put an end to the terror unleashed by these stray dogs.
The several initiatives taken by the government in the past including the sterilization of the dogs failed to bring any fruit as the process was never completed. Also, the directions given by the Municipal Magistrate in the year 2015 to kill the deadly dogs were also not implemented, thus simultaneously leaving the people to lurch at large.
To put an end to the terror unleashed by stray dogs here, the government must start a fresh with the sterilization process and also ensure that the garbage is not piled up in any locality for a longer period as the garbage that could be seen piling up at different localities till morning hours is believed to be among the main reason behind the rising dog population.
In order to prevent the deaths by dog attacks, the government should immediately come up with the measures that will ensure the rising dog population is controlled well on time, otherwise the attacks on humans and cattle may continue to occur for which nobody is held accountable and responsible.
Human lives matter and thus a step towards controlling the dog population becomes mandatory and must not be delayed any further.
