JMC revives traditional pond at ward No. 55 to boost groundwater recharge, urban water security

JAMMU, DECEMBER 31: To contain declining groundwater levels and the gradual disappearance of traditional water bodies, the Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) has launched a focused drive for the rejuvenation and restoration of old ponds across the city.

Under the initiative, the project titled “Rejuvenation of Water Body (Pond) near Chenab College, Ward No. 55” has been successfully executed by the Corporation.

The pond has been rejuvenated using bioremediation techniques, resulting in a marked improvement in water quality. A major achievement of the project is the curbing of encroachments.

Through restoration and proper demarcation of the pond area, illegal dumping and unauthorized occupation of public land have been effectively stopped, thereby safeguarding the natural drainage system and preserving the integrity of the water body.

Highlighting the significance of the initiative, Commissioner, Jammu Municipal Corporation Dr. Devansh Yadav stated that the rejuvenation of urban water bodies is a key priority of JMC’s environmental sustainability campaign.

He emphasized that such projects not only help in groundwater recharge and water conservation but also restore the ecological and social value of neglected public assets. He further added that JMC is committed to scaling up similar interventions across the city to strengthen climate resilience and ensure long-term water security for future generations.
