GOOL, MAY 21: In a major initiative to promote eco-tourism and showcase the rich natural heritage of the region, the Sub-Divisional Administration Gool, under the aegis of District Administration Ramban, today organised maiden Iris Flower Bloom Festival here at the scenic Dherian Top-Toungali.

Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Alyas Khan inaugurated the festival as the Chief Guest in the presence of SDM Imtiaz Ahmed, Tehsildar S. Harjeet Singh, officers from civil and police administration, prominent citizens, local artists, school children and a large gathering of citizens.

Speaking on the occasion, the Deputy Commissioner congratulated the SDM and the organising team for successfully hosting the first –ever festival of its kind in the area. He said the event reflects the immense tourism potential and rich cultural identity of Gool and adjoining areas. Highlighting the importance of environmental conservation, he said the blooming Iris fields symbolize the need for harmonious coexistence with nature and collective responsibility towards preserving the environment.

The Deputy Commissioner said that such festivals would help attract tourists and create livelihood opportunities for local communities. He also appreciated the vibrant cultural performances presented by school children and local folk artists, which showcased the traditions and heritage of District Ramban.

A major attraction of the event was the presentation of awareness skits and cultural programmes by students focusing on social issues, particularly the menace of drug abuse.

Referring to the ongoing 100-day “Nasha Mukt Jammu and Kashmir” campaign launched by the Lieutenant Governor, the Deputy Commissioner emphasized the importance of engaging youth in positive activities such as sports, cultural programmes and community festivals to keep them away from substance abuse and other social evils.

He urged citizens to cooperate with the administration in identifying those involved in drug peddling. He further appealed to families and civil society to support victims of addiction through counselling and rehabilitation.

Speaking on the occasion, SDM Imtiaz Ahmed said the maiden Iris Flower Festival was organised to promote the tourism potential of Gool sub-division and showcase its scenic beauty, local culture and traditional cuisine. He said the picturesque Toungali area, popularly known as the “Valley of Flowers,” was chosen as the venue as the Iris flowers were in full bloom, presenting a mesmerizing natural landscape for visitors. He appreciated the enthusiastic participation and cooperation of the local public in making the event a grand success.

The SDM also thanked all stakeholders, especially civil society members, local youth and the government departments, for making the event a grand success.

The festival venue featured vibrant natural Iris flower gardens, photo spots and stalls displaying local cuisine and handicrafts. The event concluded with the Deputy Commissioner expressing gratitude to local artists, musicians, school children and the public for their enthusiastic participation and contribution towards the success of the maiden festival.
