ADDC Shopian chairs District Road Safety Review Meeting

SHOPIAN, JUNE 20: Additional District Development Commissioner (ADDC) Shopian, Dr. Nasir Ahmad Lone today chaired a meeting of the District Road Safety Committee to review the road safety scenario in the district and assess measures being undertaken for reducing road accidents and associated casualties.

At the outset, the chair was informed that road safety meetings are conducted regularly with the objective of minimizing road accidents and associated casualties through coordinated efforts in the areas of engineering improvements, enforcement, public awareness and emergency response.

The meeting reviewed the status of road safety in the district, enforcement measures, identification of accident prone locations, safety audits of bridges and public buildings, action taken on previous decisions, road safety planning for 2026-27 and recommendations for future interventions.

During the meeting, a detailed data regarding road accidents, enforcement activities and safety audits was presented before the chair. It was informed that during the year 2026, a total of 27 road accidents were reported in the district, including three fatal and 24 non fatal accidents.

The committee was further informed that 100 percent road accident cases are being monitored and uploaded on the designated road safety portal to facilitate timely analysis, monitoring and corrective action.
Regarding enforcement measures, it was informed that during the current financial year 2026-27, the Motor Vehicles Department issued 224 challans, with penalties amounting to Rs 4.10 lakh.

The chair was informed that corrective measures have been undertaken at accident prone locations and other vulnerable road stretches identified through accident analysis.Concerned departments have taken necessary interventions including installation of signages, improvement of road markings, strengthening of safety infrastructure and other preventive measures aimed at reducing accident risks.

He stressed upon the adoption of the 4E Strategy—Engineering, Enforcement, Education and Emergency Care for effective road safety management.

The chair also directed the concerned officers to intensify awareness campaigns regarding the RahVeer Scheme so that maximum people become aware of its benefits and are encouraged to assist road accident victims during emergencies. He emphasized wider publicity through educational institutions, social media platforms and public outreach programmes.

The meeting was attended by ADC Shopian, Dr. Zakir Hussain Faaz, Project Director NHAI, Dy.SP, DAR, Executive Engineers from PMGSY, R&B and I&FC, Dy. Sp Traffic, ARTO, representatives from BRO, and SDRF Shopian.
