Literary Gathering in memory of Sardar Karan Singh Satwant Ji held at Baramulla

BARAMULLA, AUGUST 07: A commemorative literary programme comprising a poetry session and book release was organized today in the memory of noted Sufi writer, poet and columnist Sardar Karan Singh Satwant Ji of Khadniyar, Baramulla.

The programme was organized by the Punjabi Sahitya Academy (Regd.), Baramulla, in collaboration with the Jammu & Kashmir Academy of Art, Culture & Languages (JKAACL), Srinagar, and Government Degree College for Women, Baramulla, at the College Auditorium.

The literary gathering brought together eminent poets, writers, academicians and literary enthusiasts from different parts of the Kashmir Valley to remember the life, literary contribution and enduring legacy of the distinguished writer.

Dr. Sukhwinder Singh, a prominent writer from North India, was the Chief Guest, while S. Jaipal Singh, Retired Deputy Commissioner, presided over the function. Among those present were S. Sulinder Singh Sodhi, President, Punjabi Sahitya Academy (Regd.), Baramulla; Gurnam Singh, General Secretary; Prof. Syed Gulzar Ahmed, Principal, GDC Women Baramulla; Prof. Satwant Singh, Former Principal, GDC Tangdhar; Sh. Popinder Singh Paras, Senior Editor, Sheeraza Punjabi, JKAACL; Prof. Faiz Qaziabadi; and Karan Singh Talib, besides a large number of writers, poets and literary enthusiasts.

A book dedicated to the memory and literary legacy of Sardar Karan Singh Satwant Ji was released on the occasion. The 2026 edition of Seraj was also unveiled. In addition, the latest issue of Sheeraza Punjabi was released during the programme.

The poetry session witnessed participation by poets from different parts of the Valley, who presented their compositions reflecting the themes of spirituality, humanism, love, social harmony and Kashmir’s composite cultural ethos. The poetic presentations provided a befitting literary tribute to the departed writer and highlighted the enduring relevance of his literary and philosophical vision.

Welcoming the Chief Guest, President, Punjabi Sahitya Academy (Regd.), Baramulla, highlighted the activities and achievements of the Academy. He reaffirmed the Academy’s commitment to promoting Punjabi language, literature and culture through regular literary and cultural programmes across the region.

Speaking on the occasion, Senior Editor, Sheeraza Punjabi, JKAACL, said that the Academy has consistently supported literary and cultural activities and has been making sustained efforts towards preservation and promotion of the languages, literature, music and cultural heritage of Jammu and Kashmir. He informed the gathering that the latest issue of Sheeraza Punjabi was also released during the programme and stated that the poetry session was sponsored by JKAACL as part of its continued efforts to encourage Punjabi literature and provide platforms to writers and poets across the region.

Principal, GDC Women Baramulla, appreciated the organizers for holding the commemorative programme at the College and expressed the institution’s willingness to extend all possible support to literary and cultural initiatives in the future. He emphasized that such programmes provide an important platform for literary dialogue and play a significant role in preserving and transmitting the region’s rich cultural traditions to younger generations.

The speakers recalled the significant contribution of Sardar Karan Singh Satwant Ji to Sufi literature and Punjabi literary expression. They highlighted the humanistic and spiritual dimensions of his writings and noted his contribution towards promoting human values, communal harmony, mutual understanding and Kashmir’s composite cultural traditions.

Dr. Sukhwinder Singh, in his address, paid rich tributes to the departed literary personality and emphasized the need to preserve the literary traditions and intellectual heritage of the region. He stressed the importance of introducing younger generations to the works of eminent writers so that their literary and cultural legacy continues to inspire future generations.

In his address, S. Jaipal Singh, highlighted the enduring relevance of remembering eminent literary personalities whose writings transcend social, religious and cultural boundaries. He appreciated the organizers for commemorating the life and contribution of Sardar Karan Singh Satwant Ji and observed that literature has the power to promote harmony, understanding and social cohesion.
