“Draupadi Murmu”, India’s Hopes High

The constitution, in all its glory, has ensured that Draupadi Murmu was elected as the nation’s 15th President through a procedure that resulted in India’s first tribal woman holding the office. Additionally, it implies and draws attention to the fact that democracy has deep roots throughout India, ensuring that anyone with the necessary qualifications can ascend to the top positions and that the process remains legitimate and genuine. Such changes are not possible so easily in the nation states that, despite having a constitution in place, do not find the roots of democracy well placed and defined. In such countries, the people holding the highest posts are either thrown out or are made to flee—but in India, there is the opposite of that.

Apart from the Presidential election which is carried out indirectly, the general elections, where the people come out and vote depict the real essence of the democracy in India. While our neighbor is habitual of seeing several governments in single tenure, India has had the honor of witnessing the process of transfer of power between the two sides democratically and as per the principles laid down by the constitution of India. And if today, India is thriving on the global landscape, it is due to the stability of the Governments, especially the active and constructive participation of the people in deciding who is going to rule them over the next few years.

Over time, the overall democratic structure across the country has further strengthened and that is due to the personalization of Governance by those in power; something that we have seen in PM Modi, who once assumed the title of ‘Chowkidar,’ done to infuse a sense of belonging among the people underlining that he is there for the service of the people. While we won’t argue on the delivery, what, however, has been noted, is that this personalization has further helped strengthen the roots of democracy by infusing faith and a sense of authority in the people.

This is the beauty of the democracy whose blueprint is the constitution of India which needs to be protected and upheld if we want the democracy to strengthen its roots further; because what we see on the ground—and the process which ensured that Mrs. Murmu reaches the highest office—is the reflection of the constitution which has made the country stand out across the world; tell it to the world that what we have, makes us, as a country, special and different. Lastly, while the people of the country are proud to have such a rich legacy, they also have high expectations from the new President, hoping to see her influencing the policies of the Government for the betterment of the poor and downtrodden across India. We wish her luck!
