Srinagar: Amid the revolution in health care facilities in the World, Jammu and Kashmir lacks a Robotic surgical system for which patients are forced to visit outside UT.

Robot-assisted surgery uses specialized technology that enhances the capabilities of your surgeon’s hands. It allows surgeons to perform procedures in hard-to-reach areas through small incisions. The specialized technology also enables precise movements and enhanced magnification.

Several doctors while talking to news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) said that Robotic Surgical system is need of an hour at tertiary care health facilities at least as it multiple benefits and Heart surgery, Gastrointestinal surgery, General Surgery, Gynecologic surgery, Thoracic surgery, Urologic surgery and other surgeries can’t be conducted

They said that robotic surgery has multiple benefits and if such a system will be established at SKIMS, GMC Srinagar and other tertiary care health facilities patients need not to go outside J&K for treatment.

Noted urologist Dr Salim Wani told KNO that robotic surgical systems will allow surgeries to be done with precision, miniaturization, small incisions, decreased blood loss, less pain and quicker healing time.

He said that it is the need of the hour to have such a system in place at the earliest because it is the future of the surgery without which surgeons will be worthless and obsolete.

It will help in urological, gynaecological, colorectical, neurosurgical and cardio-thyrosic procedures with excellent results. “Kidney transplantation, open heart procedures are also done with excellent results,” he said.

He said that there was an acute need for procurement of this cutting edge technology, which was not in place in J&K anywhere yet.

A senior doctor from GMC Srinagar said that robotic-assisted surgery is revolutionising healthcare across the globe.

He said that Robots help surgeons to perform more accurate surgeries. It has a focus on precision care. A surgeon will perform an eight-hour robotic assisted surgery without getting tired.

Dr Irfan from GMC Srinagar said that robotic-assisted surgery including Artificial intelligence supports better patient outcomes and helps surgeons to improve efficiency.

“These advanced technologies offer quicker recoveries, no complications, and less hospital stays. These surgeries will be affordable for patients in J&K,” he said.

Several doctors said that their departments have repeatedly requested government to bring this advanced technology to the J&K

Notably, SKIMS, GMC Srinagar and GMC Jammu have virtually trained the surgeons for Robotic-assisted surgeries, however, facilities are yet to be made available—(KNO)
