Russia-Ukraine War & India’s Role

From the start of the Russia-Ukraine war one year ago, Ukraine has experienced a tremendous amount of death and destruction. This crisis and the subsequent instability are entirely the fault of Russia and its President Vladimir Putin. Thousands of civilians have died in the war, and millions more have been forced to flee their homes as a result. According to estimates, at least 42,295 people have died in the battle so far, 15,000 are missing, and approximately 1.4 billion people have been displaced. These numbers are enormous. The battle has also dashed hopes for a peaceful resolution to this disagreement, as recent talks between the two countries have shown no meaningful achievements.

On the other hand, India, which has historically been a loud advocate for regional peace and security, again decided to abstain from voting on the UN resolution recognising the necessity of a just and sustainable peace in Ukraine. India’s choice to abstain from the vote demonstrates its reluctance to get involved in what is essentially a dispute between two nations, but which has been affecting the entire world, including India. This is a shockingly naive strategy, though, as India might have been a key player in assisting with a peaceful settlement of the crisis. It was obviously simple to choose to remain neutral, but it’s crucial to realise that India’s engagement might have helped to defuse the situation and prevent the ensuing humanitarian tragedy. But, it appears that India has not been able to locate a position in which it could make a difference, or it is not willing to find one.

India needs to be proactive in settling the dispute between Russia and Ukraine going forward. It ought to inspire both nations to sit down and engage in negotiations to resolve their disputes amicably and must play its part in ensuring that peace and stability are restored. The threat of nuclear war will always exist in the current global setting, it should be stressed, and this must be regarded seriously as long as peace remains elusive. To ensure that no country can use nuclear weapons in any conflict and that all nations uphold the fundamentals of international law, the international community must cooperate. India, in particular, has a significant role to play, which it must.

There is currently no cause for optimism in the ongoing conflict, and the possibility of a nuclear conflict looms large. It is important to keep in mind that political conversation and diplomatic engagement are the only ways to resolve the situation between Russia and Ukraine. Both parties must be prepared to engage in negotiations and work towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict. This calls for adherence to the fundamentals of international law and an understanding that all parties must be prepared to make concessions. The important international players, especially India, must work to get the aid and support required to end the conflict permanently. It needs to end for the sake of humanity!
