T3 Tunnel on NH: A Beginning of an End!

The Panthyal stretch of the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, which is the most vulnerable part of the route, used to be nothing short of a nightmare for commuters. The regular landslides and shooting stones there have so far claimed a number of lives in addition to frequently disrupting traffic on the National Highway. The 880-meter-long T5 tunnel, which has twin tubes and bypasses a terrifying and difficult section of the road, has now been opened to traffic, allaying concerns about landslides and flying stones and easing driving on the NH. Since commuters won’t have to cross the hazardous terrain anymore, the tunnel holds the key to enhancing commuter safety.
While the T3 tunnel’s construction began in 2020, it took NHAI about 3 years to finish it, despite the fact that there are numerous other smaller tunnels and bridges that are still being built despite having previously missed several dates for completion. The crucial T3 tunnel’s opening must be commended, and this should encourage the government to speed up the construction of the other projects so that they can be finished well before the newly established deadline of 2024. Once these projects are finished and dedicated to the public, travelling on the NH will be even safer and easier. Furthermore, having efficient and seamless connectivity will improve J&K’s economic prospects because improved road connectivity is always the secret to sustainable growth.

The T5 tunnel’s opening represents a significant advancement in the infrastructure of the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, ensuring commuter safety, reducing traffic congestion, and, on top of that, shortening commute times. However, there is still much that needs to be done to make the highway more accessible and hassle-free for commuters as there are still many areas that need to be upgraded and are in poor shape in order to provide a smoother and safer ride for everyone. Although some projects won’t be finished until the next year, others are scheduled to be finished much before then—by the end of March or the middle of April—so that as time goes on, travelling on the Srinagar–Jammu National Highway will continue to get safer and easier.

The T3 tunnel’s opening is ground-breaking because better road connection is essential for economic growth since it facilitates better movement of goods and services, which in turn helps businesses operate more profitably and efficiently. Effective road connections are what encourage more investment and tourists, all of which are crucial for J&K’s economy’s continued growth. The Government is working assiduously to improve road connectivity; all that is required is for the project to go along more quickly in the coming months. Additional focus needs to be given to completing the four-laning of the Srinagar-Jammu NH, because that holds the key.
