Staring at third wave, won’t work

COVID-19 pandemic which has dismantled the affairs worldwide is once again looking at resurgence with the Government stating that the country is already in the third wave of the pandemic—this time, probably driven by the new variant, Omicron. Delhi, Mumbai Kolkata and several other places in the countries are reporting a record number of daily COVID-19 cases; however, there are still several states, UTs that are reporting a fewer number of COVID-19 cases.
In J&K, we have been witnessing a surge in cases for the last few days while the majority of the daily cases are now being reported from Jammu Division. The trend was the other way around as earlier, Kashmir used to report more cases than Jammu, but with Jammu reporting 3 cases of Omicron—even though they have been discharged—the surge can very well be linked with the mutation of the COVID-19 virus which is said to have higher transmissibility rate.
We might possibly be looking at the third wave of COVID-19 pandemic in J&K while as the same has already knocked at doors across the country, there is a need for taking pre-emptive measures to remain prepared for what might be heading our way. Even though J&K did well in handling the situation in the latter part of the 2nd wave, there is a need for remaining vigilant as the pandemic sees resurgence.
The Govt has to play its role in vaccinating enough population, keeping ready the testing kits and ramping up the daily score at the same time, increasing the oxygen capacity further and keeping available the required number of ICU beds. It is better to be ready now as things can go out of hands anytime.
