Two days orientation programme for LSUM members concludes at Srinagar

SRINAGAR, JANUARY 01: The District Legal Services Authorities (DLSAs) of Srinagar and Budgam successfully concluded a two-day orientation programme today conducted for the members of the Legal Services Unit for Persons with Mental Illness and Persons with Intellectual Disabilities (LSUM).

The event was held under the chairmanship of Jaffer Hussain Beg, Chairman DLSA Srinagar/ Pr. District & Sessions Judge, Srinagar and Om Prakash Baghat, Chairman DLSA Budgam/ Pr. District & Sessions Judge, Budgam and under the supervision of Nusrat Ali Hakak, Civil Judge (Sr. Division)/Secretary, DLSA Srinagar/ DLSA Budgam.

The training was organized as part of the implementation of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) Scheme 2024.

The programme, which commenced on December 31, 2024, was aimed at enhancing the understanding and capabilities of the LSUM members in delivering effective legal services to individuals with mental illnesses and intellectual disabilities.

On the second day of the programme, Secretary of DLSA Srinagar and Budgam, emphasized the critical role of the unit members in ensuring access to justice for this vulnerable section of society. She highlighted the importance of the NALSA scheme 2024 in promoting inclusivity and legal empowerment for marginalized groups.
Masarat Shaheen, a retired judicial officer, joined virtually and shared her valuable insights. She discussed the legal and social challenges faced by persons with disabilities and provided practical strategies for addressing these issues. Her experience and expertise enriched the training sessions and inspired the participants.

Advocates Suhaila Ali and Adv. Laila Khalid also actively contributed to the programme, emphasizing the practical application of the NALSA scheme and encouraging the participants to adopt a proactive approach in their roles.
Members of the Legal Services Unit from DLSA Budgam participated in the programme through virtual mode, ensuring comprehensive involvement despite geographical constraints.

The two-day orientation programme aimed to equip the LSUM members with the necessary knowledge and skills to effectively implement the NALSA Scheme 2024. It also sought to foster a deeper understanding of the legal rights and entitlements of persons with mental illnesses and intellectual disabilities, ensuring that they receive the support and assistance they need.

This initiative reflects the commitment of the DLSAs of Srinagar and Budgam in upholding the principles of justice and equality for all, especially the most vulnerable members of society.
