SRINAGAR, JANUARY 16: Department of Handicrafts and Handloom Kashmir today distributed 10 Kani looms and 25 sets of specialized Namdah tools to local artisans free-of-cost, a significant initiative aimed at promoting the region’s rich cultural heritage and empowering its traditional craftsmen.

The event was held at the Handicraft block office Safakadal Srinagar and was presided over by Mussarat Islam, Director, Handicrafts and Handloom Kashmir.

This strategic move is part of the Government’s ongoing efforts to support and sustain the centuries-old craft traditions of Kashmir, ensuring artisans have access to the necessary resources to continue their work while gaining opportunities to expand into global markets.

Speaking at the event, Director emphasized upon the importance of this initiative. “This is a vital step towards enhancing the economic independence of our artisans. We are committed to providing them with the resources and opportunities needed to thrive in the global market,” he said.

The distribution of Kani looms and Namdah tool kits will enable artisans to improve the quality and efficiency of their craftsmanship, empowering them to produce high-quality traditional products while increasing their competitiveness.

The event was organized by the Assistant Director of Handicrafts, Srinagar, Mohsina Irshad, who also played a significant role in ensuring successful execution of the programme.

This initiative marks another important milestone in the ongoing efforts to uplift the Handicrafts sector in Kashmir, ensuring the preservation of its unique heritage and the welfare of its artisans.

It is significant to mention that since Srinagar’s designation as a member of the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) and its recognition as a Craft City by the World Crafts Council (WCC), the Department of Handicrafts and Handloom, Kashmir has accelerated its efforts to celebrate and preserve the region’s rich artistic heritage.
