JAMMU, JANUARY 29: Mission Shakti SANKALP HEW, Social Welfare Department, in collaboration with Government College for Women Parade on Wednesday organized an awareness lecture on sensitization of Youth against Gender based Violence.

The Women’s Study Centre, CASH and NSS Jammu were part of the event held under the aegis of Nayi Chetna 3.0 Campaign that aims to amplify awareness against gender based violence through grassroots initiatives.
Held under the patronage of the College Principal Dr. Ravender Kumar Tickoo, the programme was coordinated by Dr. Seema Malpotra, Convener, WSC and CASH.

High Court Advocate Meenu Padha was the resource person. Throwing light on the subject, she said gender equality is essential in modern society for building an equitable society. She made the students aware of “The Gender Based Violence in India With A Spotlight on Jammu And Kashmir”.

The resource person explained that Gender-based violence (GBV) is any harmful act perpetrated against a person based on their gender, including physical, sexual, psychological, and economic violence. “It’s a human rights violation driven by harmful gender norms and power imbalances” she added.

Elaborating further, she said Gender-based violence is a big problem in India as many women face things like: Being hit or hurt and added that this can happen at home, work, or in public.
Explaining sexual abuse she said this includes rape, unwanted touching, and other harmful acts.

The students were made aware of the Legal Laws like The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO).Protection Of Women From Domestic Violence Act, 2005 (Pwdva). The POSH Act, or the Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (Prevention, Prohibition and Redressal) Act, 2013.

“Many women don’t report these things because they are scared to be ashamed. The laws to protect women sometimes don’t work well. This makes it hard to stop violence and help those who are hurt. The lecture was followed by discussion in which students asked her many questions pertaining to gender equality. Official of Mission Shakti, Specialist in financial literacy Sunil Kumar was present.

The event was attended by students of different semesters, NSS Volunteers and the members of WSC & CASH. The Principal appreciated the initiative of Mission Shakti and efforts of the Convener and committee members and also advised to organize such more events for creating awareness among students. Dr. Isha Sharma compared the whole event.
