POONCH, FEBRUARY 27: In a significant move towards enhancing water conservation efforts, Deputy Commissioner Poonch, Vikas Kundal, today flagged off the Watershed Yatra, here from the DC Office Complex.
The initiative aims to foster community participation and raise awareness about watershed development activities across the region.
The yatra traversed various routes within Poonch city, culminating at Government High School Kulani, where an awareness program was presided over by DDC Chairperson Tazeem Akhtar.
The event commenced with the National Anthem, followed by a water conservation pledge taken by participants, including students, civil society members, and community leaders, committing to conserve water.
Project Manager IWMP Naeem ul Nisa Bhatti, emphasized the critical role of community involvement in the success of watershed programs. She highlighted that such initiatives are vital for mitigating climate change impacts, enhancing agricultural resilience and ensuring the sustainability of water resources.
Addressing the gathering, DDC Chairperson reiterated the importance of watershed management in boosting rural livelihoods and long-term water sustainability. She encouraged local communities to adopt sustainable practices like rainwater harvesting and efficient irrigation systems to combat climate change effects.
Other speakers reiterated the urgent need to conserve water for future generation and stressed the integration of watershed development activities into broader development schemes.
The program also featured a cultural performance by local singers, Bhoomi Pooja, plantation drive and the inauguration of various construction works, marking a comprehensive approach to community engagement and environmental stewardship.
