Wildlife Deptt Kashmir warns against sale/purchase/ possession of Scheduled birds

SRINAGAR, APRIL 28: Wildlife Department Kashmir has warned against the sale, purchase, or possession of Scheduled birds, calling it a criminal offense under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972.

As per an official communication issued from the office of Wildlife Warden, Wetlands Division Kashmir, Srinagar it has been informed that any individual or bird vendor found engaging in such activities will be subject to legal action.

As per Section 51 of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972, any person who contravenes the provisions of this Act shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to seven years or with a fine up to Rs. 01 lakh, or both.

If the offense involves a bird specified in Schedule I, the punishment shall be not less than three years and may extend to seven years, along with a fine of at least Rs. 25000.

If the offense involves a bird specified in Schedule II, the punishment shall extend up to three years, along with a fine of at least Rs. 25000.

It has come to the notice of Wildlife authorities that some of the Birds listed under Schedule I & Schedule II are being traded by the vendors or possessed for bird keeping which is strictly prohibited.

Individuals who are currently in possession of any of the Scheduled birds are urged to surrender them voluntarily at the nearest wildlife facility to avoid legal consequences. The authorities will ensure proper rehabilitation and care of the surrendered species.
