RAMBAN, JUNE 25: The District Administration Ramban today observed “Samvidhan Hatya Diwas” to mark 50 years since the imposition of the Emergency on 25th June 1975, a period widely regarded as one of the darkest chapters in India’s democratic history.

The Emergency era was marked by a sweeping suspension of civil liberties, curtailment of fundamental rights, erosion of constitutional safeguards and an unprecedented centralization of executive power. The press was subjected to strict censorship and thousands of political leaders, journalists, and members of civil society were jailed during this period.

Senior officers from the District Administration along with officials and participants from various walks of life attended the programme and shared their reflections.

During the event held at Ramban and Banihal, the officers emphasized the importance of safeguarding democratic institutions and drawing lessons from the past to protect the rights enshrined in the Constitution of India.

They stated that it is crucial to reflect on this dark chapter of our history and reaffirm our collective commitment to the Constitution. Rights such as the Right to Equality, Right to Life and Right to Dignity are not mere words but living guarantees bestowed upon us by the framers of the Constitution, to whom we owe a deep sense of gratitude.

This year marks 50 years since the imposition of the Emergency, serving as an opportunity not only for remembrance but also for deep reflection on the resilience of India’s democracy and a renewed commitment to protecting the rights and freedoms enshrined in the Constitution.

Earlier, various speakers delivered insightful lectures highlighting the constitutional, social and political implications of the Emergency.
