The commencement of train services on the Baramulla to Sangaldan section of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link Project (USBRL) marks a significant milestone in the journey to connect the Kashmir Valley with the rest of India’s railway network. This development, scheduled to begin on February 20th, signifies not just the inauguration of a new railway line, but also a symbol of progress, connectivity, and development for the region.

The completion of this 184-km-long section demonstrates the relentless efforts and commitment of Northern Railways towards realizing this ambitious project. Despite facing various challenges, the railway officials have worked diligently to overcome obstacles and ensure the timely completion of this crucial infrastructure. The introduction of new MEMU and DMU train services between Baramulla and Sangaldan will not only enhance transportation options for the residents but also open up new avenues for economic growth and development. Efficient and reliable transportation infrastructure is essential for fostering trade, tourism, and overall socio-economic development in any region, and the inauguration of these train services will undoubtedly contribute to these objectives. Furthermore, the nearing completion of the Sangaldan to Katra section, along with the significant progress made on the overall Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla rail link project, instills hope and optimism for the future connectivity of the entire region. With 96% of the project already completed and the remaining work in full swing, it is evident that the vision of seamless connectivity is on the verge of becoming a reality.
The decision to initiate train services before the upcoming Lok Sabha elections underscores the government’s commitment to prioritize infrastructure development and connectivity enhancement in the region. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s expected virtual inauguration of the newly completed railway line between Banihal to Sangaldan and Chenab Rail Bridge further emphasizes the importance attached to this project at the highest level of governance
As we welcome this significant step towards connectivity, it is imperative to acknowledge the collective efforts of all stakeholders involved in making this project a success. From the engineers and workers on the ground to the policymakers and officials overseeing the project, their dedication and perseverance have paved the way for this momentous occasion.
