SHOPIAN, OCTOBER 28: Deputy Commissioner (DC) Shopian, Charandeep Singh, today chaired the monthly District-Level NCORD (Narco Coordination Centre) meeting at the Mini-Secretariat, Shopian, to review ongoing measures aimed at curbing drug abuse and strengthening coordinated efforts to combat the drug menace across the district.

The meeting was attended by Senior Superintendent of Police, Shopian, Mushtaq Ahmed Choudhary; ADC, Dr. Zakir Hussain Faaz; Principal, GDC Shopian, Prof. Tariq Ahmed; ACR, Shakoor Ahmed Dar; SDM, Zainapora, Bilal Ahmed; Tehsildars; DIO and officers from various departments, including Revenue, Health, Education, Agriculture, Horticulture, Social Welfare, Excise and Taxation, Youth Services and Sports, Drug Control and other concerned departments.

During the meeting, the Deputy Commissioner reviewed the action taken by various departments on the directions issued during previous NCORD meetings. He stressed the need for close interdepartmental coordination, effective implementation of anti-drug measures and sustained efforts to prevent substance abuse, particularly among the youth.

The Deputy Commissioner emphasised the importance of awareness programmes in educational institutions and public spaces to sensitise people, especially young people, about the harmful consequences of drug addiction.

He called upon all concerned departments to work collectively to identify vulnerable areas, strengthen preventive measures and encourage community participation in the fight against drug abuse.

He further stressed the need for regular monitoring, timely action and strict enforcement of relevant laws to curb the availability and sale of narcotic substances.

The officers were directed to ensure effective implementation of the directions issued during the meeting and submit Action Taken Reports (ATRs) for proper monitoring and follow-up.

The Deputy Commissioner directed the Drug Control Department to intensify regular inspections to curb the misuse and illegal sale of drugs. He stressed that all concerned officers must work proactively on the ground and adopt a coordinated, result-oriented approach to eradicate the drug menace and safeguard the younger generation from its harmful consequences.

Emphasising the need to protect the future of the youth and uphold the honour of their parents, the DC called for sustained awareness and collective efforts to keep young people away from substance abuse. He appreciated the Principal, GDC Shopian, for organising numerous awareness camps in this regard and urged the college authorities to conduct more drug de-addiction and awareness programmes, observing that educational institutions are important platforms for reaching and guiding young people.

He further emphasised the need for the Drug Control Department to strengthen its field staff, intensify inspections of medical shops, ensure strict scrutiny of prescriptions, conduct prescription audits wherever required and remain vigilant against any irregularities.
