Leh, May 07 : In a landmark move to strengthen border infrastructure in high-altitude regions, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday virtually inaugurated 50 strategic projects worth Rs 947.43 crore, executed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO).

The projects, as reported by the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), span several key areas, with 16 located in the Union Territory of Ladakh under Project Himank and Project Vijayak.

The virtual event, held from New Delhi, saw participation from prominent leaders, including Chairman/CEC LAHDC Leh Adv. Tashi Gyalson, Deputy Chairman Tsering Angchuk, Executive Councillors Tashi Namgyal Yakzee and Ghulam Mehdi, Nominated Councillor Ven. Konchok Tsepel, and Councillor Dr. Morup Dorjey, who joined from the Dhomkhar site.

Marking BRO’s 66th Raising Day, the ceremony commenced with a patriotic chant of “Bharat Mata Ki Jai”, celebrating the launch of *Operation Sindoor*.

Notable Ladakh-based projects include eight key roads and six bridges, essential for defence logistics and civilian access to remote areas. Among them are the Tangtse–Lukung and Chusul–Demchok roads, and the Kanglajal and Domkhar bridges. Two additional works—a specialised ammunition cavern at Hanle and surfacing at Chang La and Wari La—enhance regional resilience.

Speaking at the occasion, Adv Tashi Gyalson hailed the projects as transformative, aligning with the Prime Minister’s vision for a developed Ladakh. He expressed gratitude to the central leadership for prioritising border development.

Highlighting the symbolic fusion of progress and tourism, BRO’s new Café Himank along the Tangtse–Lukung Road was also inaugurated, offering rest and refreshment in a scenic high-altitude setting.

Defence Minister commended BRO’s execution of complex projects under harsh conditions, emphasising their role in national security and local empowerment. Director General BRO Lt Gen Raghu Srinivasan elaborated on the strategic value of these initiatives.

Adding to the region’s pride, Project Himank was named the Best Project among BRO’s 18 nationwide ventures and recently received the Chief of Army Staff Unit Appreciation—the first BRO project to do so.

The people of Ladakh welcomed the initiatives, recognising the BRO’s role in transforming daily life and ensuring year-round mobility in one of India’s most challenging terrains
