Earthquake Anticipation: We Must be Prepared!

According to a study conducted by renowned US-based seismologist Roger Bilham, an earthquake with a magnitude of 9.0, the largest ever recorded on the Richter scale, is anticipated to strike the Kashmir valley. The seismologist claimed to have reviewed the data on the region’s current seismic activity. He also noted that there has been a lot of seismic activity in the Kashmir region in recent years, implying that there is a significant likelihood that a huge earthquake may occur soon.  Even though the research is not new, recent earthquakes in Kashmir and other affected countries have reignited debate about government preparations and the steps that must be taken to reduce damage in the event of an earthquake of this scale.  While the argument regarding readiness and the steps the government must take to ensure people’s overall safety is ongoing, some experts are also emphasizing the plausibility and scientific validity of anticipating earthquakes of such magnitude.

Some argue that such a prediction is impossible, while others claim that it is conceivable. The concerns of those who want some policy decisions to be made in this direction have grown as a result of Bilham’s study, which has come to light again, regardless of the degree of research and predictive power. As the recent earthquake in Kashmir demonstrated, we must be prepared for natural disasters. Unpredictable earthquakes have the potential to do significant damage to both human life and property.  Kashmir is prone to earthquakes due to its location in the seismic zone, and the administration must be well-prepared to reduce the damage. It must establish a comprehensive plan aimed at remodelling and safety expenditure to increase the safety of the residents.

As part of a well-thought-out strategy, decision-makers must select land for residential and important services in less vulnerable areas to natural disasters, with a special emphasis on decongesting the most populated districts and giving wide green spaces for rescue a greater priority.  As part of the strategy, the government should also reconsider the growth pattern, especially in light of the current increase in urbanization, which could signal doom for J&K, a seismically active zone. Buildings must be seismically designed and equipped with the necessary safety features as soon as possible to mitigate the damage that earthquakes can do.

A large piece of land is available in the Zakura area up to Ganderbal, which the authorities should take into consideration in addition to the necessary plan measures. This area could be a better choice for future urban and essential service planning because it is located at a high altitude, is not at risk of flooding, and is well connected to other areas. The decision-makers have to wake up before it is too late to act. They must avoid taking a casual stance on the matter because it directly affects the people and the entire set-up in J&K. It is crucial that the government take the required measures to assure safety and, more importantly, concentrate on issues surrounding safe and secure urban design ensuring not only the safety of the residents but also lessening harm.
