Forensic Science Laboratory hosts 2-day workshop on Crime Scene Management to address New Criminal Laws

JAMMU, MARCH 08: The Jammu & Kashmir Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) Jammu on Saturday concluded a comprehensive two-day workshop focusing on Crime Scene Management in light of India’s newly enacted criminal laws.

The program brought together officials from District Mobile Forensic Units and forensic experts to explore the practical implications of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Bhartiya Nagrik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) and Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam (BSA).

The event commenced with an inaugural address by the Chief Guest, Gurmukh Singh, Director FSL, J&K. He highlighted recent advancements in forensic technology and their increasing role in criminal investigations amidst legislative changes. Singh emphasized the importance of modernizing forensic capabilities to align with the updated legal framework. Shiv Pal Singh, Accounts Officer, JKFSL, also graced the event as special guest.

Dr. Kumar Sourabh, Deputy Director of FSL (Jammu), delivered an engaging opening session, stressing the significance of scientific crime scene management and the expanding responsibilities of forensic laboratories under the new laws. He reiterated JKFSL’s dedication to enhancing investigative expertise through specialized training initiatives and continuous professional development.

The coordinator of the workshop, Ankush Kumar, Deputy Director, Narcotics/Chemical Division of FSL, Jammu, outlined the core objective of the program, viz. to improve investigative skills and ensure that District Mobile Forensic Units of Jammu and Kashmir are fully equipped with all skill set required to tackle emerging challenges in crime investigation.

The workshop comprehensively covered multiple critical areas to enhance participants’ understanding of crime scene management. Rakesh Hangloo, Forensic Expert provided an overview of different types of crime scenes and their importance in investigations whereas Rohit Koul, Forensic Expert discussed the principles of Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) and the crucial role of forensic teams in the investigative process.

As forensic science evolves alongside technological and legal advancements, this workshop represents a pivotal effort to keep J&K’s forensic teams at the forefront of modern investigative practices. Participants gained valuable insights into forensic science’s central role in the criminal justice system, along with enhanced crime scene investigation techniques.
