Srinagar, Dec 07 : A shocking revelation has come to light where a five-year-old niece was thrown off the Rajbagh Bridge opposite SPS Museum Srinagar by her mentally distressed aunt three days ago. The girl succumbed to her injuries on Friday at a Srinagar hospital, a police official said.

He said the girl, a minor aged four years, passed away at Srinagar’s Super Specialty Hospital after battling multiple injuries.

A police official informed the news agency, that the little girl was accompanied by her aunt, who allegedly threw her off the fence of the bridge, and the child reportedly fell on the concrete base below and suffered severe injuries.

As the incident occurred, locals and pedestrians rushed the girl to the hospital, but despite fighting for her life, she succumbed yesterday at the Srinagar hospital, he said.

The officer further disclosed that during questioning, the aunt revealed she was on anti-depressant medication and had been experiencing panic attacks. “The accused lady also revealed she is engaged and for the last five to six days, she was not even taking to her fiance,” he said.

Meanwhile, eyewitnesses from the area told KNO that the woman was shouting continuously and tried to resist being held back by the public.

One of the eyewitnesses said, “On that day, I was on the other side of the bridge selling socks. I saw a lady accompanied by a little girl. First, the lady came close to the fence of the bridge, and we thought they were looking for something in the water. Suddenly, the lady took the little girl and threw her off the bridge into the Jhelum. The girl fell on the concrete base of the bridge.”

He continued, “As the lady threw her into the Jhelum, she also tried to jump in, but I stopped her. I called a shikara in the Jhelum, and we were all involved in rescuing the little girl. The lady ran towards the Jhelum shore and tried to commit suicide again, but we stopped her. We took her, and later, the police arrived and took her into custody.”

The authorities from Srinagar’s SMHS Hospital told KNO that the little girl was initially admitted there but was later shifted to the Super Specialty Hospital, where she passed away in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) on Friday.

Police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) at Kothi Bagh Police Station. The officer in charge told KNO that the FIR was initially registered under number 70/2024-109 BNS for attempted murder. After the girl’s death, it was updated to 103/BNS, and the woman has been arrested, he said.

The officer said the accused was identified as Samaira Mushtaq (32), daughter of Mushtaq Ahmed Bhat, a resident of Rajbagh Srinagar, while the little girl was identified as Hadaya (04), daughter of Tahir Mushtaq.
