Pakistan might well be staring at yet another season of political instability as the opposition parties have opened a front that is turning out to be quite difficult for the Imran Khan-led Government to handle. Almost all the major opposition parties in Pakistan have huddled together and have so far held several rallies to show their strength. While the proceedings of the No-Confidence motion are scheduled to be held on March 26, speculations are all around that Khan might not survive the move; however, time only will decide that.
The opposition has been accusing the PM of corruption and degradation of the economy since the time the PTI rose to the power. If the opposition is to be believed, then the intuitions such as NAB and FIA along with the judiciary have been used by Khan to target his political opponents, but the same is continuously being denied by Khan who has been projecting himself as a saviour of the country even the poor continues to suffer across the country.
As of now, Khan appears to be in the face-saving and survival mode and has been doing everything possible to pass the test which is going to be held just after three days. What is quite interesting to note here is that several noted close aides of Khan have already deserted his party and even though they have not joined anyone in the opposition, the hints are clear that they will be standing against Khan.
What is typical of Pakistan politics is that no popularly elected Government is ever allowed to complete its term. What the united opposition is doing to Khan is what his party did to Nawaz Sharif. Back then, Khan accused Sharif of corruption, triggering massive protests across the country, prompting early elections in the country, paving a way for PTI to secure power. Even though Sharif was tried in court, on health grounds was allowed to travel to England. But that was not it. Sharif coordinated the strategy of the opposition to oust the Government right from London.
No matter there is a historical track record of such events unfolding in Pakistan; PM Khan is currently caught in a tight spot where there are just limited options left for him and where he is doing everything possible to ensure the survival of his Government. While Khan is doing that, the result of March 26 is going to have great effects on the political stability of the country which is right now doing everything to stay relevant in the region, particularly by rallying behind Afghanistan.
