India’s victory in the Thomas Cup a few days ago has come for the first time and has made the entire nation proud. The players who were part of the team were on cloud nine as, after their victory, Prime Minister Modi called them and congratulated them for achieving the feat. After reading the interviews of the players who brought laurel to the country after winning the prestigious cup, it seems as if they were under a spell and did not believe that they have done what so far seems impossible and that the Prime Minister called them to extend greetings on the occasion. The team deserved the victory as they have been trying hard to reach there and have finally made it by defeating 14-time champion Indonesia by 3-0.

The victory is not only impressive but the same projects that India’s sporting achievements are no longer limited to the cricket even if the cricket is being played on a varied number of platforms while the factor of the money remains a major driving force. The Thomas Cup victory of India should also tell that the players are not always lured by money, as we see in cricket these days. While cricket brings fame as well as huge money, the players who are carrying on with games that are not so common, are purely driven by passion and grit and should be an eye-opener as well as inspiring for the younger generation.

No matter whether India has produced the greatest cricketers of all times, it is all now moving beyond that. No matter, the game like cricket has money in it, but the happiness of finally registering a victory in the Thomas Cup since its inception in 1949, is beyond words and can only be felt by those with heart. Team India has been trying hard to create history and even executed several unsuccessful attempts, but this time the luck favoured them and they ended up scripting a new chapter in India’s sporting history.

India’s victory in Thomas Cup should determine the future course vis-à-vis Government’s approach towards games other than cricket. There is a need for going down to the grassroots, ensuring better infrastructure for the games that are not so popular while a great talent pool remains there to be utilized. The time has come to look beyond cricket and make sure that the talent in those games is harnessed effectively so that India moves ahead in other sporting spheres as well. The time has come to provide better facilities to the players of other games so that they could also excel and perform to create new records. The time has come for a change, let the player aim for stars, even if they miss, they will still hit the moon.
