Kashmir valley braces for snowfall on Dec 29

Srinagar: Kashmir valley is bracing for light to moderate snowfall over the middle and higher reaches and light snowfall at a few places on plains likely to occur on December 29 evening, Meteorological Department said.

The weather will remain mostly cloudy for two days from today and on December 29 evening there are chances of light to moderate snowfall over the middle and higher reaches up to 4-6 inches and light snowfall at a few places on plains, Deputy Director MeT Mukhtar Ahmad said.

He said the weather will improve from December 30 afternoon and likely to remain dry till January 4.

The minimum temperature will also improve gradually as the weather is turning cloudy as there is already a slight improvement since yesterday. There are chances the minimum temperature would improve till December 31 hereafter the temperature is likely to plunge again especially from January 1st.

Tourist resorts of Pahalgam and Sonamarg received light snowfall while the Kashmir valley continues to reel under severe cold with Srinagar recording a low of minus 4.8 degree Celsius on Tuesday.

Tourist hot spot of Pahalgam in south Kashmir received 3.4 cms snowfall and 3.7mm of rainfall overnight. Pahalgam also remained the coldest place in Kashmir valley with temperature having a low of minus 6.7 degree Celsius on Tuesday against minus 5.7 degree Celsius recorded the previous night.

Sonamarg in central Kashmir Ganderbal district also received light snowfall late last night.

There was no relief in severe cold conditions that prevailed in Srinagar and other parts of the valley.

Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu and Kashmir recorded a low of minus 4.8 degree Celsius against minus 3.5 degree Celsius a day ago. It was minus 2.7 degree Celsius below normal during this period of the season.

Gulmarg in north Kashmir recorded a low of minus 5.9 degree Celsius against minus 5.0 degree Celsius the previous night.

Qazigund on Srinagar Jammu national highway recorded a low of minus 3.6 degree Celsius while Kukernag had a low of minus 2.9 degree Celsius on Tuesday.

Frontier Kashmir district of Kupwara had a low of minus 4.8 degree Celsius against , MeT office said.
