Lajurah Pulwama residents demand strengthening healthcare

Pulwama, Jun 30 : Concerned over limited healthcare services in their area, the residents of Lajurah in South Kashmir’s Pulwama district have urged authorities to deploy more doctors at the Primary Health Centre (PHC) Lajurah.

Speaking to the news agency, locals said the PHC is being managed by only one doctor, which is inadequate to meet the growing healthcare needs of the area.

“We respect the dedication of the lone doctor posted here, but how can a single individual handle emergencies, outpatient care and routine check-ups for the whole area?” said Bashir Ahmad, a local resident.

“Our population is increasing, and so are the medical needs. We are not asking for a luxury—just basic, timely care.”

The villagers said that having only one doctor has severely impacted access to proper medical services, particularly in times of emergency or during night hours. “We have to wait for hours to get the turn as there remains a good flow of patients at the hospital,” they said.

The residents added that the existing infrastructure at PHC Lajurah has potential but remains underutilized due to a shortage of medical staff. “We are not demanding a full-fledged hospital overnight. But at least two to three more doctors should be deployed so that shifts can be managed and patients don’t suffer,” said Ghulam Nabi Dar, another local.

They urged upon the district administration to address the issue at the earliest, saying it directly affects the health and wellbeing of hundreds of families in the region.

Locals said that recently two doctors were posted to the hospital but they transferred themselves even without joining the hospital.

They said that despite requesting authorities several times nothing has been done as of now.

The residents requested Deputy Commissioner (DC) Pulwama and CMO Pulwama to take immediate steps to deploy additional doctors at PHC Lajurah, ensuring quality healthcare reaches every doorstep.

Meanwhile, CMO Pulwama Dr Tahmeena told KNO that another doctor has been posted and he will be available at Lajurah hospital for two days in a week while other steps are being taken in this regard—
