Musk Shaping “Twitter” Out of Box

With Elon Musk finally closing the deal on $44 billion to buy Twitter, the social media platform is set to see drastic changes, ranging from decision-making to letting people have more freedom while being there and at the same time, ensuring structural changes which will be futuristic. What is more interesting is the company’s transition from being public to becoming a private enterprise which in itself comes with an upper hand in critical matters. As we see, earlier, the company’s ownership was not centralized, and now, it very well is: Musk owns Twitter and will get to decide its functioning and tweaking wherever he deems fit.

Anything could happen when we talk about Twitter. Musk could decide to bring back the Tweeters like former US President Donald Trump whose Twitter handle was permanently suspended for inciting violence. He could very well dilute the guidelines that govern what could be published on Twitter and what not. In the name of doing a “great service” to the freedom of expression, Musk could go a step further because he does not believe in gatekeeping.  But, there, he needs to tread carefully, because absolute freedom will surely end up becoming a curse for the world: the reason being Twitter!

Musk is creative; he is ambitious at the same time, and there is a likelihood that he would do everything to change the outlook of Twitter; he might end up bringing it to the level of Facebook and Instagram which are widely used for various uses—something where Twitter has been lagging. Tweaking Twitter to that extent might be welcomed by people, but that will destroy the very essence of the social media platform which has been used essentially for shaping public opinion worldwide and has stood out, keeping up with its essence.  Earlier, Musk had also talked about the verification process of Twitter and had pitched for making it a bit easier apart from cleaning the platform of the spam and bot accounts whose use has been made widely. Even though then, Twitter refuted his claims but Musk owns it now, he could be already in the process of ascertaining facts about bots and spam accounts littering the site.

We also know that Musk is passionate about cryptocurrencies; could it be time for him to use Twitter to try and change people’s perceptions of it? Who would stop him if he were to set up a system for businesses to accept cryptocurrency payments? There is nothing he cannot accomplish and change the course of Twitter for all time, but there are still some places where he must exercise prudence. In addition, he must maintain and strengthen Twitter’s core values for its 396 million global users since those people are there for a reason, and that must be safeguarded at all costs. Rest assured that Musk is free to use Twitter to display his creativity and vision; after all, those were his $44 billion.
