Need for revisiting reservation

Reservation has always been an issue and a lot has been discussed about the need for having it in the first place when the financial and economic condition of people has improved considerably. The reservation typically ensures that people belonging to the backward sections of the society are given some relaxation so that they could ultimately rise and work for improving their standard of living.
The same is the case with the reservations given under SC, ST quota—where people from underprivileged sections of the society are given relaxations so that they could come forward, secure their place and ultimately make their lives better. But things are going in an opposite direction.
In the country, while there are several benefits of the reservation, there are also some shortcomings as well that are straining the entire system and in a way turn out to be an injustice for the people who belong to the general category.
Over time, the people have come out of poverty and are living a good life with reservation being the decisive factor. But, things become quite gory when the people press for their category to play a role in the departmental promotions. These people use reservations to get the jobs and at the same time use it to get the priority in the promotions—something which is ridiculous.
The time has changed and with that, the law which ensures the reservation to several sections also need to be changed. The reservation—particularly that of ST and SC—should be made available to people trying to secure a job, admission to educational institutions—and after that, the benefits should cease to exist. The time for making changes is up and waiting.
There is a need to bring a systematic change in the law of reservation by keeping the principle of elevating the backward intact. It also needs to be ensured that people who are in a good social, economic condition and continue to reap benefits of reservation, are scrapped out and those who are deserving, should get their share of reservation.
