SRINAGAR, NOVEMBER 28: In an effort to uplift rural livelihoods and conserve native livestock, Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) organised a large-scale input distribution and awareness camp in the border areas of Karnah, Kupwara.

The initiative was conducted by SKUAST-K’s Division of Animal Genetics and Breeding (AGB), Faculty of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry, in collaboration with the Sheep Husbandry Department (SHD) and is part of the ICAR-sponsored Network Project on the conservation of local sheep breeds.

MLA Karnah, Javid Ahmad Mirchal, who was the Chief Guest on the occasion, distributed the sheep among the progressive farmers. To transform the local gene pool, genetically improved Rams and Ewes were distributed free of cost among the breeders of Jabde and Batlan, Karnah, with an aim to enhance the quality and productivity of their flocks.

Speaking at the occasion, he lauded the efforts of SKUAST-K for reaching out to these remote border areas and taking the crucial initiative for the conservation of native valuable genetic resources.

Around 65 sheep breeders in Tangdhar were educated on the importance of conserving native genetic resources and adopting scientific rearing methods.

Meanwhile, Beneficiaries were provided with university-developed quality feed and quality medicine to enhance flock health and productivity. A total of 39 beneficiaries received deworming medicine and mineral mixtures.
On the occasion, breeders were made aware of various scientific technologies and practices developed by SKUAST-K to improve their traditional methods.
