Sri Lanka Political Turmoil —- Dynastic Rulers alone Responsible

Over time, so much has happened to Sri Lanka—once known for its calmness and stability—its President Gotabaya Rajapaksa has now fled the country after the angry protestors in lakhs thronged the presidential palace, prompting the Rajapaksa to exit along with his wife. The people continue to be on the roads, protesting; angry over what has been done to their country by the people who continue to have the power. What is heart-breaking is that the Sri Lankans are craving for the essentials while their economy stands crashed and what makes the situation gory is that the people who are behind all this mess, are, one after another, fleeing the country.

There has been a sustained lack and absence of economic policy in Sri Lanka where the corrupt dynasts continued to hold the power to the extent where they ended up spilling it all around; the country ran out of foreign reserves, left with nothing even to keep the essentials up and running, leaving the country in total chaos. The situation that the island nation is facing has got its roots several years back. The successive Governments—which have always been belonging to one single family—resorted to tax cuts to woo their voters while, despite not being in a position, extending several free services. On top of it, there have been a few agricultural reforms too which turned out to be a mere failure, especially the move of banning fertilizers. The decision impacted Lanka’s agriculture and to deal with that, the Government had no plan B. On top of it, the country was neck-deep in foreign debt.

In this mayhem, which was going on unnoticed for a long time, what has been noted is that dynasty politics has remained in the driving seat; it has always been people belonging to one family calling the shots, majorly to benefit their ends and leaving the people to fend for themselves. If there were tax cuts, the same was not done in the interest of the country’s economy, rather, the same were driven by the interests of the people who were corrupt and had nothing to do with the welfare of the country—the results of which are now in front of the world.

One thing which is crystal clear and should serve as a lesson to people across the globe, especially, the people of India, is that dynasty politics can never be in the interest of the people as it always revolves around personal gains and losses—it cannot see beyond that. This is what has happened in Sri Lanka, something that should serve as a live example for the people of India who need to shun, discourage dynasty politics and work towards defeating the aims and objectives of such people because such people, as well as such parties, cannot work towards making the country great, rather, they would work harder to see themselves progressing, their parties gaining hold. The country has seen that in the past. Better be cautious ahead.
