SRINAGAR, FEBRUARY 13: Social Welfare Department, Srinagar, through SANKALP–Hub for Empowerment of Women (Mission Shakti), successfully organized a Training-cum-Sensitization Programme on the PC&PNDT Act for owners of diagnostic centres in District Srinagar at the Conference Hall of Amar Singh College, Srinagar.

The programme aimed to strengthen compliance with the provisions of the Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (Prohibition of Sex Selection) Act and to sensitize representatives of diagnostic centres about their legal and ethical responsibilities. Representatives from ultrasound clinics, genetic counselling centres, genetic laboratories, and imaging centres across the district participated in the programme.

The initiative focused on reinforcing the objectives of the PC&PNDT Act, which was enacted to prevent sex selection and address the issue of declining child sex ratio.

Ruqaya Ashraf, District Mission Coordinator, Mission Shakti Srinagar, inaugurated the session with a detailed discussion on the Beti Bachao Beti Padhao initiative and the implementation of the PC&PNDT Act. She emphasized the collective responsibility of stakeholders in ensuring strict adherence to the law.

Resource Person from Health Department, highlighted the critical role of diagnostic centres in upholding the law and safeguarding the rights of the girl child. It was stressed that strict adherence to the provisions of the PC&PNDT Act, including proper maintenance of records and mandatory registration requirements is essential to prevent misuse of diagnostic technologies.

Resource Person from District Legal Services Authority, Srinagar, elaborated on the legal perspectives of offences under the PC&PNDT Act and other related provisions, sensitizing participants about the consequences of non-compliance.

The programme concluded with an interactive session, where participants clarified their queries and reaffirmed their commitment to ethical practices and strict compliance with the Act.
