With 5G, India is set to experience a technological transition

India is all set to have the 5G telecommunication services in October as the spectrum auction culminated after 7 days in which the richest men of Asia participated, of which Mukesh Ambani’s R-Jio ended up becoming the largest bidder, with it buying spectrum worth $11 billion; Adani group—which is the new entrant—has spent about $26 million while as the rest of the bids have come from Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea. With that, the country is set for another big transition in telecommunication services and the internet of things while 13 selected cities in the country will benefit from the services, to begin with.

The 5G in telecommunication is going to revolutionize daily affairs and is not only going to affect the lives of common Indians but will set several other sectors on the fast, swift peddle, aiming at ensuring more productivity coupled with the fast-paced process happening across India. However, in comparison to the 4G (LTE) services, the penetration of the 5G services across India is going to be slow, rather, it is going to remain largely confined to the internet of things apart from hugely impacting the cellular and data services after a bit of delay.

While R-Jio has stated that it is ready for the rollout of 5G services, it, along with Bharti Airtel has bid for the pan-India spectrum while Adani Group is going to keep the services confined to ports and airports—which points to the enhancement of service delivery and process execution at the ports and airports across the country which is going to be noticed after the rollout of the services post-October. This point also makes it clear that the 5G services in the country are going to have a wide range of impacts while being a game changer in giving a further boost to the Government’s ‘Digital India’ initiative, over time, pan-India.

What, however, might turn out to be a limiting factor concerning the penetration of 5G services in the country is that, at present, only 7% of India’s smartphones are 5G enabled and it is natural that the total technology shift is going to take a bit more time and on top of it, the 5G enabled phones mean extra spending coupled with the extra charges which the telecommunication companies are going to charge for the services. But what is noteworthy here is that the rollout of the 5G services comes with more positives and a few negatives—limiting factors—in other words, but largely, we are going to witness a sea-change in human lives and the processes that were used to see execution at a much slower pace. With 5G, India is set to experience a technological transition that will ensure the transformation of public as well as private sectors on a much larger scale.
