With Jasia in WPL: Celebration for J&K Women Cricketers!

Jasia Akhter, a native of South Kashmir’s Shopian, won the contract during the auction held earlier this week for Rs 20 Lakh, making her the first female cricketer from J&K to secure a spot in the inaugural Women’s Premier League-2023 (WPL). She will represent Delhi Capitals in the upcoming, inaugural WPL. Jasia, a 35-year-old right-handed hitter who currently represents Rajasthan, bowls with his right arm in the medium range. She had previously played for Punjab and Trailblazers, but she left J&K due to the Union Territory’s underdevelopment of women’s cricket, where the sport is more than two decades behind. This leaves players who want to succeed in the game little choice but to leave and play for other states.

With Jasia, Delhi Capital’s selection for the Women’s IPL, beginning a journey that could change her life, female sports in Kashmir may experience a significant uptick. But, it is necessary to demonstrate the intent and make sure that a difference is created in order for that to be leveraged. Jasia’s admittance into the WPL should have a significant impact on those in charge of J&K’s activities, particularly in the sports arena. While our men’s cricket hasn’t been able to flourish the way it should have, one finds it quite difficult to see female cricket holding the ground and showcasing the talent—because there are no avenues; meagre resources that could be utilized by the women cricketers who are not only talented and skilful but also come with leadership qualities to effectively lead their side.

While Jasia’s admission to the WPL is a cause for celebration, it should also push the authorities to improve the state of the game in the UT, which is not short in sporting potential. In men’s cricket, J&K has produced several cricketers and in women’s cricket, J&K has started with Jasia, but there could be many more, who are craving to be found, their skills honed so that they could represent their country, their state. A significant accomplishment for J&K cricket, entry into the WPL-2023 is a sign of the sport’s growing appeal as well as the tremendous potential of UT’s female cricketers. Jasia being selected for the WPL is a great win for J&K cricket and will encourage more girls to take up the sport.

The players will have more possibilities to hone their cricketing abilities, and it will also serve to increase the profile of J&K’s cricket. Yet, to promote cricket, the government must play a crucial role. They must make sure that the necessary infrastructure is in place to facilitate the expansion of the sport, including identifying talent, providing sufficient training and coaching resources, and setting up events and tournaments to promote participation. More so, cricketers from J&K must not stop at the national level; rather the authorities must also work to create opportunities for them to pursue professional careers in cricket and represent the country globally. With Jasia in WPL this year, there is hope for excellence and more success for J&K cricket.
