The latest reports of migratory birds returning to Kashmir’s Wular Lake after several decades are encouraging evidence that efforts to preserve the lake’s delicate environment are having an impact. One of the biggest freshwater lakes in Asia, Wular has long served as a haven for a variety of migratory birds. But in recent years, the lake was exposed to a wide range of environmental dangers, such as pollution and overuse of its resources. The sensitive ecosystem of the lake has suffered as a result, and migratory birds visiting the lake have sharply decreased. But it appears that things have changed now.

The water quality of the lake has thankfully improved as a result of recent conservation measures, and migratory birds visiting the lake have started to rise. This is evidence of the beneficial effects that conservation initiatives may have on ecosystems, and the lake’s recovery is exciting to watch. The migratory birds returning to Wular Lake is evidence that conservation efforts are having an impact and that the environment of the lake is steadily improving. So that migratory birds can continue to visit the lake for many years to come, it is now up to the local community to make sure that the lake’s delicate environment is safeguarded and preserved.

While the migratory bird population returning to Wular Lake is a sign that conservation efforts are having an impact and the lake’s ecosystem is improving, the administration and the concerned departments now need to take steps to maintain the lake’s delicate ecosystem so that the migratory birds can continue to thrive for years to come. The government must go above and beyond standard procedures in a scientifically sound and timely manner to fully restore the splendour of this priceless lake. That includes prohibiting all actions such as encroachments on the banks, lake pollution, sewage, etc.

The Khushal Sar, which was restored through public-private cooperation and the outcome is in front of us, also received similar news of the return of migrating birds after decades. The government as well as the locals must play a crucial role in the long-term conservation of the water bodies, especially Wular. While the local bodies must be made more aware and accountable to ensure that the lake is effectively preserved and maintained, the local administration must make sure that the lake is clean, sanitary, and safe for all the species that depend on it. The public’s understanding of the lake’s significance and the necessity for protection must be raised. People should be made aware of the value of preserving the lake’s ecosystem and its surroundings, as well as the necessity to safeguard the migrating birds which have now started to throng the lake. The need of protecting and conserving water resources at all costs must be emphasised and for that to happen, both the government and the general public must work together.
