Dry spell persists as night chill intensifies across Kashmir

No significant weather activity till Jan 7, says MeT; Sgr shivers at minus 5.2 degree Celsius

Srinagar, Jan 01: While the dry spell persisted across the Valley, the night chill has intensified further with Srinagar recording a low of minus 5.2 degree Celsius. However, the weatherman here has predicted mainly dry weather till January 7 with possibility of light snow over isolated extreme higher reaches in between January 4-5.

As the 40-day harshest winter period—Chillai-Kalan is ongoing in the valley, the mercury continued to settle below freezing point.

However, compared to previous nights, the minimum temperature has recorded a further dip on Monday.

According to data, Srinagar, the summer capital of Jammu & Kashmir has recorded a low of minus 5.2 degree Celsius while Pahalgam was the coldest where mercury settled at minus 5.7 degree Celsius.

Kupwara in north Kashmir has recorded a further dip in mercury as the minimum temperature in the district has settled at minus 4.5 degree Celsius.

Gulmarg, a famous ski-resort has however, recorded a low of minus 3.4 degree Celsius.

In Qazigund and Kokernag areas of South Kashmir, the mercury has settled at minus 3.6 degree Celsius and minus 1.7 degree Celsius respectively.

Meanwhile, the weatherman here has predicted a dry spell till January 7.

Director Meteorological department, Dr Mukhtar Ahmad told KNO that mainly dry weather is expected till January 3rd while in between January 4-5, generally cloudy with dry weather over plains is expected during the period, but there is a possibility of very light snow over isolated extreme higher reaches.

Furthermore, he said the weather would again remain mainly dry from January 6-7. “Overall, no significant weather activity is expected till 7th January,” he said—(KNO)
