Srinagar, Jul 31 : While the suicide incidents have witnessed an upward trend, there is an immediate need to block the hotspots by fencing the bridges across Srinagar in order to prevent such incidents in the future.

The local residents of Habba Kadal and the surrounding areas here have urged the authorities to install proper fencing on Habba Kadal Bridge, as well as on others.

Notably, a teenage girl (name withheld) jumped into the river Jhelum from Habba Kadal bridge on Wednesday afternoon. A rescue operation was soon launched, but no traces of the girl were found.

Speaking to the news agency—, the locals from the area said they request the authorities to install proper fencing at Habba Kadal and other bridges in Srinagar City to prevent such incidents.

“We have approached the authorities many times to request fencing for the bridges. This morning, a lady also tried to jump from the Habba Kadal Bridge but was later stopped by locals. The authorities have constructed a beautiful bridge here, but it too has witnessed a suicide incident,” said Arsalan, a local resident said.

The officials from SDRF, when contacted, told KNO that they have started the rescue operation and, so far, no traces of the girl have been found. “Our boat is scanning the water, and we are trying our best to retrieve the body,” said, ASI SDRF Abdul Rashid
