Srinagar, Nov 08 : Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) president Tariq Hameed Karra on Friday described the legislative assembly session as a successful one, saying the people’s voices, sentiments and concerns that were “repressed” for the past decade have been fulfilled now.

“With joy and determination, a resolution on statehood was passed,” Karra said, calling it a “major victory for the people”.

The J&K Congress chief, speaking to the media persons on the last day of the Legislative Assembly session, highlighted the importance of the non-controversial approach taken by legislators, saying they carefully avoided polarising language to ensure that the issue could move forward without unnecessary national debate.

“Had any contentious language been used, parties like the BJP could have exploited it, turning it into a divisive issue. But this resolution was presented thoughtfully, leaving no room for that,” Karra, as per the news agency, said.

Notably, the J&K Assembly on Wednesday passed a resolution asking the Centre to restore the special status of the erstwhile state.

The move was hailed by the valley-based political parties, it prompted protests by the main opposition BJP which demanded its rollback.

The passage of the resolution led to an uproar in the House as the BJP members protested vociferously, resulting in frequent disruptions of the proceedings.

Many political parties welcomed the move. PDP president Mehbooba Mufti however termed the resolution as a “half-hearted” effort, saying it could have been written “in a better way”.

It is pertinent to mention here that Congress, which is an alliance partner of the ruling NC, welcomed the resolution, saying it reflects the urges and aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir.
