Srinagar, Dec 13 : The government of India has allocated an amount of Rs 4.80 lakhs in the Financial Year 2023-2024 under the Sakhi Niwas (Working Women Hostel) scheme for Jammu and Kashmir; the centre informed the Parliament on Friday.
Notably, J&K has one operational working women hostel.
The government, under the Sakhi Niwas Scheme (Working Women Hostel) within the Mission Shakti framework, is committed to providing safe, secure, and affordable accommodation for working women and those aspiring to join the workforce, a written reply by Minister of Women and Child Development, Annpurna Devi, reads as per the news agency.
The demand-driven Centrally Sponsored Scheme allows States and Union Territories to propose hostel facilities based on local needs, approved by the Programme Approval Board. The scheme focuses on rental-based accommodations with provisions for day-care facilities for children in urban, semi-urban, and rural areas with employment opportunities for women. Since the launch of Mission Shakti on April 1, 2022, the scheme has discontinued funding for new constructions, shifting its focus to rental accommodations, she said in a reply.
Previously, the grant-in-aid was provided for constructing and expanding hostel buildings, as well as for paying rent for some facilities, the reply added
