NC questions haste behind ‘one nation, one election’ bill

Srinagar, Dec 13 : National Conference (NC) on Friday questioned the motive behind the Union Cabinet’s decision on One Nation One Election proposal, stating that there is a need for the thorough deliberations and discussions on this issue before it is turned into a law.

Parliament member from South Kashmir and senior NC leader Mian Altaf Ahmad said that the rush with which the bill is being tabled is in itself questionable at the first place.

“First of all, I don’t understand why they are in such a rush to pass this bill. There should be discussions and deliberations on it. This is a vast country, and there should be debates on this issue in every corner of the nation. This is not a matter that can be passed in haste. This is my opinion, the opinion of my party, and the opinion of all the parties in the INDIA alliance. Many others, including media personnel and civil society members, also believe that everyone should be consulted on this issue,” he said, as per the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO).

According to Main Altaf the general public’s perspective should also be understood, and their input should be gathered before such a significant law is introduced. “When the bill is presented, the opposition will express its concerns in the House, and these concerns will also be brought to the public’s attention. We would like the government to address the doubts and apprehensions we have about this matter. We also want to understand the motives behind this move.”

Speaking about the Supreme Court verdict halting the survey spree on the religious places in the country, Mian Altaf termed the top court’s decision “historic” and deserves all the praise it receives. “It [the verdict] has silenced those who were spreading hatred. The 1991 Act should be fully implemented. The Supreme Court’s judgment on this issue is commendable.”

He added that his party would raise the issue of ongoing vendetta against the Muslim places of worship in the parliament. “We will certainly raise it, as we have done in the past. We want secularism in India to remain intact. We want India’s democracy to remain intact. We want the betterment of this nation, and the nation’s progress lies in every institution functioning properly.”
