JAMMU, FEBRUARY 01: On World Wetland Day, Department of Environmental Sciences and Eco club of Government Degree College Vijaypur organized a students’ visit to the Gharana Wetland under the guidance of the Principal Dr. Vandana Verma.

The visit was aimed at making students aware about the vital role that wetlands play in supporting biodiversity and maintaining ecological balance. The field visit is the part of their practical coursework that combines environmental education with traditional agricultural practices.

Prof. Poonam Kundan (HOD Environmental Sciences and Convener Ecoclub) shared her insights on the significance of such field visits. She emphasized the need for integrating traditional ecological knowledge with modern scientific practices to create a more sustainable agricultural framework. She further explained that by understanding and respecting indigenous practices, students can contribute to the preservation of biodiversity and promote sustainable farming methods that are essential for the health of our planet.

Students of the college enthusiastically enjoyed Bird watching at Gharana Wetland and they used high-power binoculars to observe the activities of the birds in the wetland. Students were acquainted with different varieties of resident and migratory birds visiting the area.

During the visit students not only explored the wetland ecosystem but also took the opportunity to visit traditional farms in the area. They were able to witness age-old farming methods that have been passed down through generations, focusing on sustainable agricultural techniques and the cultivation of indigenous crops.

Additionally, the students documented indigenous knowledge related to farming practices, recognizing its relevance in modern agriculture.

The students, along with faculty members, interacted with local farmers and learned about the importance of crop diversity, organic farming, and the use of natural resources in a sustainable manner. This knowledge is increasingly significant in today’s context of climate change and environmental challenges, making traditional wisdom a crucial component of future agricultural practices.

The students also interacted with the locals to understand their perspective regarding the management measures taken by the Department of Wildlife Protection, Government of J&K and sensitized them regarding the importance of the wetland in the area.

Overall, the celebration of World Wetland Day by GDC Vijaypur students not only highlighted the importance of wetlands but also fostered a deeper appreciation for traditional agricultural practices and their relevance in contemporary agriculture. This experience is a step towards bridging the gap between ancient wisdom and modern sustainability efforts.

The one day tour was coordinated by Prof. Poonam Kundan and co-coordinated by Dr. Radhika Rasyal, Prof. Mazid Malik and Prof. Shukoor Nazir.
