Absence of Public Transport Service in the Evening

Srinagar is facing a total absence of public transport service in the evenings and those who remained out for the day, intending to return home in the evening, find it quite difficult as on their way back home, they face a lot of hassle. The lack of evening public transport has put a lot of strain on the people who have to commute in the evening. The lack of buses, autos and other forms of public transport means that people have to either walk long distances or take expensive cabs—if they happen to find one—to reach their destination, which not only gets quite inconvenient but also unsafe, especially for womenfolk.

As soon as six o’clock rolls around, people can be seen waiting impatiently at the city’s major bus stations. When buses do finally arrive, they arrive without enough room for the commuters, leaving them stranded. The lack of evening public transportation in the city is also contributing to more people using their vehicles and two-wheelers to go around, which results in a lot of traffic jams, which in turn, increases pollution, which goes without saying.

People’s daily problems must be noted by the district administration in particular and the transportation authority in general. More buses must be available so that people can travel conveniently and safely in the evening. With the advent of electric vehicles, the government has the option of offering these vehicles at reduced prices to the unemployed and requiring them to ply on routes where there is a lack of transportation, particularly in the evenings. Also, the transportation division could utilise more electric buses; have them run on city routes until 10 pm in the summer and 9 pm in the winter.

Furthermore, several sumos that operate within the city without a clearly defined halt station, or “stand,” end their days as soon as the clock strikes five. The administration can easily give them the designated area and ask them to operate till late hours on various routes, especially those that are experiencing a transportation deficit. By doing this, the administration will be able to find a solution to two different issues: the commuters’ problem and the issue of the sumo drivers’ associations. At the same time, there is also a need for starting the necessary transport service on the routes which are already in the knowledge of the district administration so that the daily commute of the people is facilitated. The administration is in charge of taking the necessary actions to enhance the city’s public transportation system. The issue requires an immediate remedy because it is well-known and has existed for a long time.
