JAMMU, DECEMBER 12: The Department of Animal Husbandry Jammu officially launched the fifth phase of National Animal Disease Control Programme (NADCP) for Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) today here at village Hakkal, Jammu which was presided over by Director Animal Husbandry Jammu, Dr. Waheeda Parveen.

Speaking on the occasion, the Director said that NADCP is a flagship scheme launched by Prime Minister in September, 2019 for control and eventual eradication of Foot and Mouth Disease and Brucellosis by vaccinating 100 percent susceptible livestock population.

“FMD is highly contagious viral disease of cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats and pigs etc. which leads to reduction in milk yield, infertility, reduced working capacity in bullocks, creates problems in international trade of livestock products, thus, causing huge economic losses to our farmers every year”, she added.

The Director emphasized that control of FMD can be achieved by mass vaccination of susceptible livestock population repeatedly at regular intervals till the incidence of the disease comes down. This will pave way for gradual eradication of the disease from the country by year 2030 thus benefitting the farming community immensely.

The Director further said that the NADCP incorporates mandatory ear tagging and online registration of vaccinated animals along with the owner details utilizing the Bharat Pashudhan or National Digital Livestock Mission (NDLM) portal enabling proper monitoring.

She urged the farmers and local authorities to support and cooperate with the vaccination efforts of the department. The director further called on department officers and officials to ensure sincere efforts to make the campaign successful.

Joint Director (ARV Lab.), RS Pura, CAHO Jammu besides officers and staff of the Animal Husbandry department were present on the occasion.
