Srinagar, June 19,: A gas cylinder explosion in Kupwara jail has left all-but nine inmates injured, causing significant concern among authorities and the local community.

The incident occurred today within the jail premises. According to initial reports received by Srinagar based news agency , the blast happened in the jail area where a gas cylinder was in use. The force of the explosion resulted in injuries to nine inmates.

An official told KDC that emergency services were promptly dispatched to the scene, and the injured were taken to a nearby hospital. Medical personnel have stated that while some injuries are serious, all victims are currently receiving appropriate treatment and are in ‘stable’ condition.

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the explosion and to ensure that all safety protocols are reinforced to prevent such incidents in the future.

The jail administration is working closely with local law enforcement to assess the damage and implement necessary safety measures, the official said, adding that the community and the families of those affected have been assured that all steps are being taken to address the situation and provide support.

Further details will be shared as the investigation progresses, the officer added.
