GCW Udhampur hosts Webinar to Celebrate International Mother Language Day

UDHAMPUR, FEBRUARY 21: The Department of English,Government College for Women Udhampur today  hosted a webinar,  to mark observance of the International Mother Language Day. The event aimed to celebrate linguistic diversity and promote the preservation and appreciation of mother tongues nationwide.

In line with this year’s theme, “Linguistic diversity and multilingualism count for sustainable development,” the webinar featured Dr. Devika Sharma as resource person from Department of Languages, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi, Katra. She shared insights into the significance of preserving mother languages in the context of sustainable development on the topic, “Mother Language: Dilemma and Delusion”.

The participants were treated to engaging discussions on the cultural, social, and educational importance of mother languages, highlighting their role in fostering inclusivity and promoting intercultural understanding. Participants were encouraged to embrace and cherish their linguistic heritage while also advocating for the recognition and protection of minority languages.

“We are delighted to have facilitated meaningful conversations on International Mother Language Day,” remarked Prof. Anjali Mahajan, Principal, GCW Udhampur. She further added, “Languages are not just means of communication; they are repositories of history, identity, and knowledge. By celebrating our mother tongues, we honor our roots and contribute to a more vibrant and inclusive global community.”

The webinar attracted a diverse audience, including students and faculty members, underscoring the universal relevance of language preservation and promotion. GCW Udhampur remains committed to fostering a culture of linguistic diversity and inclusivity, and endeavors to continue organizing events that celebrate the rich tapestry of languages and cultures around the world.

The organizing committee included Dr. Shivani Suri Verma, HOD, Department of English as the Coordinator of the event, Dr. Kamal Deep Kaur, Organising Secretary, Dr. Preeti Sharma, Co-organising Secretary, Dr. Rabia, Dr. Faheem, and Dr. Manmeet, faculty from the Department of English.
