Government Bamboo Nursery inaugurated at Nagri- Kathua

KATHUA, SEPTEMBER 24: To promote cultivation of Bamboo, the Department of Horticulture Jammu is going to establish a Government Bamboo Nursery at Nagri, Parole, Kathua under National Bamboo Mission.

A range of elite varieties of Bamboo to be planted as Mother blocks in the Government nursery have been procured from premier central institute CSIR- IHBT, Palampur, H.P.

Director Horticulture Jammu Gul Sayed inaugurated the development of the Nursery today by planting a sapling of Bamboo plant in a mother block ( Working shed) in presence of Chief Horticulture Officer Ashwani Sharma; KVK Head Vishal Mahajan; DL- SMS Sandeep Gupta; DL- SMS (Ento.) B. B Pangotra, HDOs and a large gathering of farmers.

National Bamboo Mission, a centrally sponsored scheme envisaging promotion of holistic growth of bamboo sector by adopting area based strategy to increase the area under bamboo cultivation encompassing processing and marketing. The bamboo plant is used to make diverse products including textiles, clothing, furniture, flooring, handi craft items etc.

The Director interacted with the farmers and stressed the importance of cultivating bamboo in the field, arable waste land, community land, along irrigation canals/ water bodies etc. “This will help in supplementing farm income, and contribute towards resilience to climate change as well as availability of quality raw material for industries,” he added.

Later, the Director visited Government Fruit Plant Nursery, Mirpur Ram, wherein he inaugurated the mother block of Dragon fruit established in an area of 10 kanal. He took stock of the ongoing developmental activities in the nursery and gave on the spot instructions to the nursery staff regarding the production of quality grafted planting material.

Later, Director Horticulture chaired a meeting of the District Officers, HDO’s, officials & field functionaries of district Kathua and reviewed physical / financial achievements in respect of CSS and UT sponsored schemes being implemented in the district.
