In 2021, 289 cases registered under UAPA in J&K

Srinagar: As many as 289 cases were registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act-1967 in Jammu & Kashmir Union Territory in 2021.

The Crime Gazette-2021, a copy of which is in possession of news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO), reveals that cases under UAPA were registered in 22 out of 23 police districts in the UT.

Of these cases, 241 cases were registered in Kashmir and 48 in Jammu, the crime gazette-2021 reveals.

In Kashmir region,22 cases were registered under the law in Anantnag police district,  31 in Kulgam, 25 in Shopian, 52 in Pulwama, 34 in Awantipora, 14 in Srinagar, 20 in Budgam, four in Ganderbal,  10 in Baramulla,  nine in Bandipora, eight in Kupwara, one in Handwara and 11 in Sopore.

In Jammu region, 12 cases were registered in Jammu district, two in Kathua,  six each in Samba and Rajouri, four each  in Poonch and Rajouri, nine in Doda, four in Kishtwar and one in Ramban, the report reveals.

According to the report, no case was registered under the law in Udhampur police district.

In 2020, 286 cases were registered under the UAPA, the report states.

The UAPA, also known as anti-terror law, is used to deal with anti-national and militancy- related activities.

In 2019, the law was amended to empower the Central Government to designate individuals involved in militancy-related activities as terrorists—(KNO)
