SAMBA, MAY 2: In a thoughtful initiative aimed at raising awareness about the significance of labour rights and honouring the contribution of workers, Government Degree College (GDC) Ramgarh organized a lecture to mark the International Labour Day 2025.

The event was held under the leadership of Principal of the College Prof. (Dr.) Meeru Abrol, who highlighted the importance of acknowledging the efforts of workers across sectors and the need to uphold their rights and dignity in a fair and just society.

The programme was initiated by Head of the Department of Political Science Priya Sharma, with introduction to the significance of International Labour Day. In her address, she shed light on the historical struggles of workers worldwide, the emergence of labour laws, and the ongoing challenges faced by the labour force in India. She emphasized the importance of educating students about labour rights, legal frameworks such as the Minimum Wages Act, the Industrial Disputes Act, and various Social Security Schemes designed to protect workers’ welfare.

A detailed and interactive lecture was delivered, focusing on the fundamental rights of workers, working conditions, social protections, and the role of labour unions. The lecture also addressed contemporary issues such as informal labour, economic challenges, and gender disparity in the workforce.

The programme also featured discussions on the role of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the Indian Constitution in securing the rights and welfare of workers. Real-life examples and relevant case studies were shared to give students a better understanding of the ground realities and the legal remedies available for workers.

The event was coordinated by the Department of Political Science with active support from faculty members including Dr. Aditi Khajuria, Dr. Snobar, Ashok Kumar, Prof. Brham Dutt, Dr. Neeraj Bargotra, Dr. Susheel Kumar, Priya Sharma and Ms. Sayema. The session concluded with an engaging interaction between students and faculty.
