JAMMU, AUGUST 10: A meeting of the Society for Prevention of Cruelty against Animals (SPCA) was held today at the Deputy Commissioner’s Office Jammu.
Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADDC) Sher Singh chaired the meeting convened to review the ongoing animal welfare activities undertaken in the district.
The meeting deliberated upon measures for effective management of stray dogs, vaccination, treatment of injured animals and prevention of cruelty against animals.
Detailed discussions were held on the status of the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Programme, including sterilisation and anti-rabies vaccination drives for stray dogs. The meeting also focussed on strengthening of animal rescue services and shelter homes across Jammu, besides launching public awareness campaigns to promote responsible pet ownership and sensitise citizens against cruelty to animals. Need for better coordination among JMC, JDA, Health Department, NGOs and animal welfare volunteers was also underscored during the meeting.
Speaking on the occasion, the ADDC stressed upon the need for humane and scientific management of stray animals in the district and directed the concerned departments to work in close coordination with NGOs and the Society for achieving the desired results. He further emphasised on conducting regular vaccination drives and ensuring proper waste management to prevent human-animal conflict in the district.
The meeting was attended among others by Chief Planning Officer Ajaypal Singh, Assistant Commissioner General Sania Haq Khan, senior officers from JMC, Health Department, Animal Husbandry Department, Police and representatives of various animal welfare NGOs.
